20 Short films that you shouldn’t miss at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival

These are twenty short films that you shouldn’t miss at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival which will take place in cinemas and online from July 8th – 18th, 2021.

About the festival:
The Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) aims to consolidate its identity as a ‘Fantastic Film Festival’ through Fantastic-Genre films and to provide a new and diverse aspects toward Genre film. BIFAN also encourages the understanding of different cultures through the art of fantastic films and facilitates exchange of ideas among film industry professionals from all around the world and those from Korea. Furthermore, the Festival promotes including but not limited to the production and distribution of fantastic films.

Days of the new by Keith Deligero – Philippines | 2021 – 19 minutes

A post-Pandemic world where mysterious phenomena and the digital world collide. A suspicious exhibition is captured by two police officers chasing a serial murder case, but the suspicious contemporary artist who they happen to meet in the exhibition subtly escapes the police investigation network. A noir with unique sentiments with the intense black-and-white screen filled with surreal and expressive images that show the director’s firm visual style. (Gina KANG) (BIFAN 2021)

Employee Handbook for the hope daycare center by Kim Minji – Korea | 2020 – 21 minutes

It is pouring when Kim Nari, who is rather indifferent to other people, starts her first day off at the Hope Daycare Center. Nari is just marking her time thinking the nursery is a little off. It is  her job to take care of the kids waiting for their parents when her colleague irresponsibly left them behind. (BIFAN 2021)

Inja’s Place by Shin Yoojeong – Korea | 2021 – 29 minutes

Inja is a writer and she is pregnant. Her husband suggests they throw away Inja’s desk as their place is getting more and more crowded with baby supplies. Wooseong, a famous writer, happens to notice the desk and buys it from Inja’s husband at a bargain. Although she can’t fathom why, Inja is uncomfortable with Wooseong’s kindness. (BIFAN 2021)

Live in a Box by Lee Hengchieh – Taiwan | 2021 – 13 minutes

Late at night, a man passing through a deserted street finds an eye-catching claw machine with colorful lights. Curious about the phrase that says to collect seven-color toys, he challenges to pull them out every night, and finally collects all colors of toys, given an unexpected prize. Night Bus by joe Hsieh – Taiwan | 2020 – 20 minutes

Animation based on Taiwan’s promising young director Joe HSIEH’s worldview of the virtuous and punitive. An old lady’s expensive necklace disappears on a desolate late-night bus carrying tired passengers, and the driver and passengers accuse a man on the bus. However, the situation takes a new turn as an unexpected passenger gets on the bus. This gruesome fable depicts the inner darkness and psychology of a varied group of people on a late-night bus. Six years ago, the wife of a de facto marriage went missing in Hamyang after a bus accident. Her husband visits after hearing a tip that she has registered her marriage with another man. As she gets to know more and more about Seojung, Dajung has mixed feelings of admiration, jealousy, and self-doubt. A school writing competition is coming up. Dajung longs for Seojung’s world. A woman taxidermist dreams of stuffing people, while a man is afraid of getting older and wants to freeze his time. These two meet each other by destiny and fall in love at first sight. The Criminals by Serhat Karaaslan – France, Romania, Turkey | 2021 – 24 minutes

Late at night in a village in Turkey, Emre and Nazli, who love each other deeply, try to find a hotel for the night, but there is nowhere for this young couple without a marriage certificate. They deceive the hotel staff and are finally together, but the resulting sweetness soon turns bitter. The Criminals portrays surprisingly and realistically the increasingly conservative social atmosphere of Turkey, through the embarrassed feelings of the troubled young couple. (BIFAN 2021)
