These are twenty short films you shouldn’t miss at the Kaohsiung Film Festival, which is taking place until October 22, 2023 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

A Lullaby for Yellow Roses by Rahul Roye – India | 2023 – 18 minutes | Taiwan Premiere
A working-class migrant couple, after losing their daughter to an ill-fated destiny, seek friendship in each other. (KFF 2023)

A Night with Moosina by Tsai Shiu-cheng – Taiwan | 2022 – 25 minutes
On a full moon night, a 10-year-old girl from a pig farming family in a remote village is lured by Moosina to a strange cave in the mountains, where she discovers the secret of why Moosina always plays dirty tricks on children. (KFF 2023)

China after the 1990 Asian Games. The receptionist distributes limited tickets for the movie screening in a factory while a shy poet waits for someone. A gently told, nostalgic portrait from a woman’s perspective. (KFF 2023)

Big Day by Chiang Chung-chieh – Taiwan | 2022 – 23 minutes
In the afternoon, a middle-aged married couple take a walk by the harbor and get into a fight when they meet an old acquaintance. On the way, they walk past the Mazu temple where he proposed to her, reminding them of how things used to be. (KFF 2023)

Bride Stone by Guzel Duishenkulova – Kyrgyz Republic | 2023 – 16 minutes | Taiwan Premiere
A young daughter-in-law divorces her husband and on the same day receives an offer from her father-in-law, who scares her with the legend of “Kelin Tash”. A young daughter-in-law in despair goes to the Kelin Tash at night and destroys this stone load. (KFF 2023)

Compound Eyes of Tropical by Zhang Xu Zhan – Taiwan | 2022 – 17 minutes
The film’s stop-motion animation puppets are made using Taiwan’s unique papermaking technique rooted in traditional funeral ceremonies. Through choreography in the style of the Taiwanese “yi zhen” folk dance, the film portrays the Southeast Asian folktale “The Mousedeer Crossing the River”. (KFF 2023)
