Odense International Film Festival – Asian Presence 2023

We take a look at the Asian films that will be screened at the Odense International Film Festival which will take place from August 28 – September 3, 2023 in Odense, Denmark.

Note: The list may include movies made by filmmakers with Asian ancestry.

Everything Wrong and Nowhere to go by Sindha Agha – USA | 2022 – 12 minutes | Documentary

Climate anxiety is a mental condition, and in this film it is portrayed in a sensuous visual style, which balances beautifully alongside its other tools, creating a film which is moving for everyone. (OFF 2023)

fur by Zhen Li – USA | 2022 – 7 minutes | Animation

Sensory overload, bodyhorror and flickering chaos at its very best. People with flawed nerves, who have a phobia about nails may want to look away, although it would be a shame. (OFF 2023)

Graveyard of Horses by Xiaoxuan Jiang – China, USA | 2022 – 17 minutes | Fiction

A little girl and her pregnant mother strive to survive on an isolated farm on the steppes. An intimate drama unfolds with the harrowing beauty of the Eurasian steppes as its backdrop. A vast drama is created from the close-up and relevant story surrounding the dangers of being dependent on farm animals when the elements reveal their brutal powers and wolves lurk in the shadows. An amorous male cat finds himself in a time loop on his day to get neutered, and the day keeps repeating. A funny and adorable film about love and cats. (OFF 2023)

Her Scents of Pu er by Anna-Claria Ostasenko Bogdanoff – France | 2022 – 18 minutes | Documentary

This film follows tea master Tseng; the first female tea master in China’s history. From her beautiful and meditatively pleasing shop in Paris, Tseng tells of all thing’s tea related with passion and calm dedication. This is a beautiful and riveting film which portrays stories of tea; A drink enjoyed by millions daily, but as most people probably don’t know, has a bountiful and complex heritage. (OFF 2023)

Mothers by Yuzheng Lim – Singapore | 2022 – 17 minutes | Fiction

Mothers in all shapes and forms are abound in this wavy drama which weaves its way through chaos and meditative ease in its narrative. Family relations are portrayed with intense calm, closeness and relatable relevance in this moving film. (OFF 2023)

Please Hold The Line by Tan Ce Ding – Malaysia | 2022 – 19 minutes | Fiction

A young woman works as a telemarketing salesperson, for a scammy company. She is also pregnant and in desperate need of money so she can travel and have an abortion. In this society, such a feat is taboo and thus remains a secret. Although this film has no winners everyone is chancing it until they win. The film is moving, vibrant and soaring with power and told in colours which only Malaysian movies are capable of. (OFF 2023)

Sonic fields and patterns of sound are interweaved and positioned brilliantly in this exploration of worlds. Using an array of different sources, pushes this film powerfully forward. (OFF 2023)

Watch by Sandra Yi Sencindiver – Denmark | 2023 – 20 minutes | Fiction

Watch is a story about two women who share a childhood secret. Helena seeks out her long lost friend Charlotte, who has just buried her father. Helena’s flashbacks take us 35 years back in time to Helena’s and Charlotte’s childhood. The girls are close but have a complex and tense relationship. She recalls the crucial incident that ended their friendship. (OFF 2023)
