10th Construir Cine – International Labor Film Festival – Asian Presence 2023

We take a look at the Asian films that will be screened at the Construir Cine International Labor Film Festival (Argentina) which will take place from May 11 – 15, 2023 in cinemas and online.

Ariyippu (Declaration) by Manesh Narayanan – India | 2022 – 107 minutes*

Hareesh and Reshmi, an immigrant couple from Kerala working in a medical gloves factory near Delhi, who aspire to go abroad for a better life. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, when an old video resurfaces among the factory workers, it opens up a Pandora’s box that threatens the couple’s jobs and marriage. (IMDb)


Baaki Vannavar (The Leftovers) by Amal Prasi – India 2022 – 87 minutes*

A food delivery boy in Kerala, a representative of today’s youth, strives for a better life. But he realises that nothing can be done beyond the limits of the system, and it begins to slowly affect his and his friends’ existence. (IMDb)

– Short Films –

Rasa dan Asa (Flavours, Feelings & Hopes) by Okui Lala, Nasrikah – Malaysia | 2021 – 26 minutes*

Indonesian domestic workers Ningrum and Binti could not return home to their families when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Together with other domestic workers from PERTIMIG (Indonesian Migrant Domestic Workers Association in Malaysia), they find support and hope by learning to document their lives on their handphones. In their own voice, they share their experience working and living in Malaysia during the lockdown. Rasa dan Asa celebrates their solidarity and persistence to advocate for their rights.
