41st International Film Festival of Uruguay – Asian Presence 2023

We take a look at the Asian films that will be screened at the International Film Festival of Uruguay which will take place from April 5 – 16, 2023 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

– Feature Films –

A Woman by Wang Chao – China | 2022 – 118 minutes*

From the late 1960s to the early 1980s, Kong Xiu, an ordinary female worker, bravely got rid of the shackles of two unfortunate marriages, and grew up to be a writer in her spare time in the heavy workshop work. (MUBI)


Decision To Leave by Park Chan Wook – Korea | 2022 – 138 minutes

From a mountain peak in South Korea, a man plummets to his death. Did he jump, or was he pushed? When detective Hae-joon arrives on the scene, he begins to suspect the dead man’s wife Seo-rae. But as he digs deeper into the investigation, he finds himself trapped in a web of deception and desire. (MUBI)


Next Sohee by July Jung – Korea | 2022 – 135 minutes

Sohee is a high school student focusing on a job training education. Hoping for a good job, Sohee starts an job training at a subcontracted call center, but she faces big pressure of greedy company. It is too hard for high school student to bear this situation and it leads to her death. (MUBI)


Walk Up by Hong Sang-Soo – Korea | 2022 – 97 minutes

Korean auteur Hong Sangsoo adds a new chapter to his impressive body of work, taking a gently delightful new perspective on themes dear to his poetics. (MUBI)

A Lost Astronaut and a City of Footprints by Vu Nguyen Nam Khue – Vietnam | 2022 – 15 minutes

An executive trapped in his own nightmares. In those dreams, he becomes a woman, the wife of a colleague. In those dreams, the belongings of the deceased astronaut are handed over to the wife. The woman and the bureaucracy, the executive and his recurring nightmares. How can one escapes? (MUBI)

All Tomorrow’s Parties by Zhang Dalei – China | 2023 – 24 minutes*

China during the 1990 Asian Games. A cinema screening is taking place at a factory in the evening. The janitor distributes the limited tickets while a shy poet waits for someone. (MUBI)


Further and Further Away by Polen Ly – Cambodia | 2022 – 24 minutes*

Before their impending departure for the capital city, two siblings must first bid farewell to the place they called home, each in their own way. (MUBI)


Will You Look At Me by Shuli Huang – China | 2022 – 20 minutes

As a young Chinese filmmaker returns to his hometown in search for himself, a long due conversation with his mother dives the two of them into a quest for acceptance and love. (MUBI)
