Santa Fe International Film Festival – Asian Presence 2022

We present the Asian feature films that will be screened at the Santa Fe International Film Festival which will take place from October 19 – 23, 2022 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Broker by Hirokazu Koreeda – Korea | 2022 – 129 minutes

Five years after winning the Palme d’Or for Shoplifters, Academy award nominated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda returns with Broker, starring Cannes Best actor winner Song Kang Ho (Parasite). The film follows two brokers who sell orphaned infants, circumventing the bureaucracy of legal adoption, to affluent couples who can’t have children of their own. After an infant’s mother surprises the duo by returning to ensure her child finds a good home, the three embark on a journey to find the right couple, building an unlikely family of their own. Dark Red Forest by Huaqing Jin – China | 2021 – 87 minutes

Surrounded by harsh nature and secluded from the outside world, the mysterious daily life of a group of plateau women devoted to their faith is stunningly framed in this majestic verity documentary. DARK RED FOREST presents the inner world we can”t reach in this life and some elementary human moments. (SFIFF 2022)

Hunt by Lee Jung-jae – Korea | 2022 – 131 minutes

Korean action star Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) makes his directorial debut with this 1980s-set thriller, in which he plays an intelligence chief who uncovers a plot to assassinate the president of South Korea while hunting for a mole within his own agency. (SFIFF 2022)

Return to Seoul by Davy Chou – France, South Korea | 2022 – 115 minutes

A twenty-five-year-old French woman returns to Korea—the country where she was born before being adopted by a French couple—for the very first time. She decides to track down her biological parents, but her journey takes a surprising turn. (SFIFF 2022)

The Novelist’s Film by Hong Sang-soo – Korea | 2022 – 93 minutes

A female novelist takes a long trip to visit a bookstore run by a younger colleague who has fallen out of touch. Then she goes up a tower on her own and runs into a film director and his wife. They take a walk in a park and meet an actress, after which the novelist tries to convince the actress to make a film with her. She and the actress get something to eat, then revisit the bookstore where a group of people are drinking. The actress gets drunk and falls asleep. (SFIFF 2022)
