Trying to get a foothold on life in Belgium, two young African migrants have only each other to count on. Posing as Tori’s sister, Lokita fails to secure permission to stay as a refugee, and they are left to scramble for survival in the criminal underworld. Framed in the Dardennes’ signature close-up is a beautiful and unfailing friendship, while captured with handheld shots are the struggles and dangers faced by two exploited adolescents, combining into an outright parable of injustice. Special 75th Anniversary Award, Cannes. (HKIFF 2022)
