Chao directed by Aoki Yasuhiro will open the Niigata International Animation Film Festival which will take place from February 20 – 25, 2026 in Niigata, Japan.

Chao by Aoki Yasuhiro – Japan | 2025 – 90 minutes
In a future society where humans and mermaids coexist, Stefan, an ordinary office worker, suddenly finds himself proposed to be Chao, a princess of the mermaid kingdom. As he gets to know Chao, who is pure-hearted and straightforward, he gradually grows drawn to her.

About the director:
Animation director and animator. Key animator on “The Animatrix” (2003); episode director for “Kimagure Robot” and “Tweeny Witches” (2004). Directed the omnibus “Kung Fu Love” (2006). “ChaO” marks his feature directorial debut.
