20 Short Films you shouldn’t miss at the Jakarta Film Week 2024 (Part 2)

We continue with our recommended short films from the Jakarta Film Week, which is taking place from October 23 – 27, 2024 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Mar Mama by Majdi El Omari – Palestine | 2023 – 15 minutes

Haunted by her mother’s death and recurring attacks on her city, a young girl becomes obsessed with death. Reality invades their world as her father tries to distract her by making a stop-motion film. When his efforts to shelter his daughter fail, fantasy and imagination cross paths to help her. In that fraction of time, the story breaks free, and a touch of Mar Mama’s magic saves them. (JakartaFW 2024)

Ride To Nowhere by Khozy Rizal – Indonesia | 2021 – 23 minutes

Ade, a 35 year old woman has just lost her job and will have to pay her boarding house arrears in the near future. With the help of his friend Fitri, Ade now works as an online motorcycle taxi driver called CABS. On his first day working as an online motorcycle taxi driver, he encountered problems. Most passengers canceled their orders because Ade was a woman. Ade didn’t find a bright spot until he found out that other male online motorcycle taxi drivers were constantly getting orders. Seeing this situation, Ade had a plan. (JakartaFW 2024)

If healthy organs, like seeds, can be replanted and heal any failing body, will human life be longer or shorter? An ailing mother slaughtered a vagrant she had been feeding for years for her sick son. To save his mother, the cured son killed for the criminals. She and Her Good Vibrations by Olivia Griselda, Sarah Cheok – Singapore | 2023 – 11 minutes

A stressed-out, middle-aged woman discovers the wonders of a vibrator, but she soon becomes addicted to solo pleasure sessions and loses touch with reality. (JakartaFW 2024)

Snowfall by Junwon Bae – South Korea | 2024 – 14 minutes

In 1999, Yuko sleeps beneath snowy mountains. A blizzard covers everything in white. Soyo waits for Yuko, who won’t return, amid snow covering her corpse. This tale of loss and contemplation begins where words end, exploring the silence of grief in a snow-blanketed landscape. (JakartaFW 2024)

Sour Candy by Nishi Dugar – India | 2024 – 20 minutes

Guddal, a free-spirited 5-year-old, lives in her ancestral home with her younger brother Laddoo, and older sister Chinu. Guddal orchestrates mischievous antics with Laddoo, landing her in punishment. But a sudden event in the house makes everything different. (JakartaFW 2024)

Unexpected Passenger by Hsia Jui-chien – Taiwan | 2023 – 11 minutes

At midnight on a desolate street, an unexpected passenger disturbs the driver’s break time. On the way to the destination, the navigation keeps reporting the wrong direction, and the passenger remains silent while the driver asks for the right direction. It seems like the stranger passenger has other purposes to get in the taxi. (JakartaFW 2024)

Where the Mountain Women Sing by Juefang Zhang – USA, Hong Kong, Taiwan | 2024 – 15 minutes

Two aspiring filmmakers venture into a remote Chinese village to shoot an Oscar-worthy documentary, only to find themselves entangled in the midst of a mysterious and ancient cult. (JakartaFW 2024)
