Indera directed by Woo Ming Jin will open the Malaysia International Film Festival which will take place from July 21 – 28, 2024.

1970s. JOE loses his wife in a horrifying accident that also injures him and his daughter SOPHIA. While Joe recovers, Sophia somehow is traumatized to a degree that she no longer speaks. After numerous attempts of failed treatment, Joe hears about a special healer near Tanjong Rambutan who has a home ward for children with trauma. Encouraged by a friend’s suggestion, Joe brings Sophia to the healer’s home. The healer Aishah, offers Joe a job as a workman to repair her house. While fixing the house, Joe begins having bizarre ghost-like sightings. So does Sophia, who sleeps in a room with the other girls. One night she sees an image of a creepy demonic entity coming out of an old bathroom-well, but it disappears when she wakes the others up. (MIFF 2024)

About the director:
Woo Ming Jin is one of the leading voices of the Malaysian New Wave and has had his films screened in Cannes, Berlin and Venice. His first film Monday Morning Glory (2005)screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, while his second, Elephant and the Sea(2007), won awards in Torino, Cinema Digital Seoul, Portugal and Spain film festivals. Woman on Fire Looks for Water (2009) premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, while Tiger Factory (2010), premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. It won the Special Jury Mention at the Tokyo Film Festival in 2010. His latest film, Stone Turtle (2022), played in Main Competition at the Locarno International Film Festival and won the Fipresci Prize (International Critics Prize). The film was hailed by Variety as ‘Stunning mystery that puts a supernatural twists on real world trauma…’ (Peter Debruge). Ming Jin is also a producer of many award winning films, notably Aqerat (We, The Dead)in 2017 that was the winner of Best Director and Newcomer Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
