20th Kosmorama, Trondheim International Film Festival – Asian Presence 2024

We present the list of Asian films that will be screened at the Kosmorama – Trondheim International Film Festival, which is taking place from March 4 – 10, 2024 in Trondheim, Norway.

Evil Does Not Exist by Ryusuke Hamaguchi – Japan | 2023 – 106 minutes

The director of Drive My Car (2021) is back with a new film. Single father Takumi lives with his daughter Hana in a remote village, taking small jobs for the local community. The peaceful idyll is disrupted when they learn that a Tokyo-based company plans to build an extensive and modern campground with glass igloos near their home. A conflict between nature and urban capitalism follows. (Kosmorama 2024)

FAQ by Kim Da-min – Korea | 2023 – 92 minutes

One of the strangest films at this year’s festival revolves around the curious schoolgirl Dong Chun, who happens to find a bottle of rice wine at a summer camp. She takes a sip home, and soon discovers that the wine bubbles and makes sounds that couldn’t possibly be related to normal fermentation. Could it be true that the mysterious rice wine is trying to communicate with her? And does it know more about the world than humans do? (Kosmorama 2024)

Monster by Hirokazu Kore-eda – Japan | 2023 – 126 minutes

Saori discovers some strange behavioral changes in her son Minato and eventually learns that he has been bullied by his teacher. She confronts the teacher and the school, only to be met with evasion and half-hearted apologies. However, it is later revealed that her son himself has been bullying another student. Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus by Neo Sora – Japan | 2023 – 103 minutes

Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023) composed the music for several modern film classics, including The Last Emperor (1987) and The Revenant (2015). In this concert film, he is in the final phase of his life but gathers strength for one last performance. He sits at the piano and performs 20 of his works – both film music and other compositions. The Monk and the Gun by Pawo Choyning Dorji – Bhutan, France, USA | 2023 – 107 minutes

In 2006, Bhutan is in the process of introducing democracy, and a trial election is announced. The population is still deeply loyal to the late king and not everyone is enthusiastic about this significant shift. In the aftermath, a monk is sent on a mission by his mentor. His mysterious task involves finding two weapons, without being told why. Meanwhile, an American weapons collector is looking for a valuable rifle that ends up in the hands of the monk.
