10 Asian short films you shouldn’t miss at the 42nd Uppsala Short Film Festival

These are ten Asian short films you shouldn’t miss at the Uppsala Short Film Festival which will take place from October 23 – 29, 2023 in Uppsala, Sweden.

Battery Mommy by Jeon Seungbae – Korea | 2023 – 9 minutes
Battery Mommy works in various things such as soap bubble guns, cameras, and thermometers in the nursery. During the children’s nap time Battery Mommy notices that the Christmas tree in the nursery is on fire! Urgently she runs to the fire alarm to safely rescue sleeping children. (USFF 2023)

A fish drowns, children feel nostalgic, and the memory of an elderly man is fading as he celebrates his 90th birthday. The entire family has gathered to celebrate. However, Daddy has dementia. When he loses his dentures, he embarks on a quest to find them, with the only impediment being the shifting colours of his memory, which oscillates between the present and the past. (USFF 2023)

A 13-year-old girl and a 30-something man are brought to a police station in Mumbai in the middle of the night by two strangers. Amidst questionable motives and unreliable testimonies, a frustrated female constable investigates what happened that night, and what could have happened. (USFF 2023)

Davka is a teenager who lives in a decaying Soviet building in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. With his classmate, Anuka, he talks about manga and they tease each other about sex. When Davka encounters an older woman, his ideas about intimacy and his view of relationships are forced to change. (USFF 2023)

Sunflower Girl by Holly M. Kaplan – USA | 2023 – 14 minutes
​Rosie, a 13-year-old Chinese-American girl, embarks on a skateboarding escapade through the streets of New York with her crush and his best friend, at the cost of abandoning her little sister and never delivering a forgotten lunchbox. (USFF 2023)

In the abandoned smart city of SimBeijing, a self-driving police car, Theta, confronts their existential troubles with their built-in AI therapist while patrolling the streets. As Theta gradually opens up, they reveal the darker reasons behind why the city has been abandoned. (USFF 2023)
