Cinekid Festival – Asian Presence 2023

We take a look at the Asian films that will be screened during the Cinekid Festival which will take place from October 15 – 29, 2023 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

– Feature Films –

Deep Sea by Tian Xiaopeng – China | 2023 – 110 minutes
Sparkling, atmospheric animation about Shenxiu, who has been very sad since her mother died. During a storm, she ends up in a 3D world full of astounding colours. She goes in search of the Eye of the Deep Sea to find solace led by the Hyjinx and with the help of the clever underwater chef Nanhe. (Cinekid 2023)

Kung Fu Lion by Froukje Tan – China | 2023 – 86 minutes
Jimmy (14) is one of the most fanatical kung fu pupils at his school, so he expects to be selected to wear the lion’s head during the traditional Chinese lion dance. However, his master asks newcomer Li Jié for this honour. Jimmy has to learn to set aside his ego and assertiveness in this sports-related coming-of-age drama about friendship, cooperation and dedication. (Cinekid 2023)

Battery Mommy by Seungbae Jeon – Korea | 2023 – 8 minutes
Battery Mommy works at a daycare centre where she provides power to all sorts of devices from a bubble-blowing gun to a camera and a stick blender. As the children take their afternoon nap, the Christmas tree lights short circuit. Now Battery Mommy has to save everyone by providing power to the smoke alarm! (Cinekid 2023)

Eid Mubarak by Mahnoor Euceph – Pakistan, USA | 2022 – 16 minutes
Pakistani Iman (6)’s wealthy family has bought a goat. It has to be slaughtered during the Islamic Feast of Sacrifice, later that year. But Iman becomes attached to the goat and tries to save her ‘pet’. She also learns, in this playful drama on ancient Islamic traditions, about the value of life and why it is important to share food. (Cinekid 2023)

Konigiri-Kun – Parade by Mari Miyazawa – Japan | 2022 – 5 minutes
There’s a party when the sushi, dumplings, and vegetable treats come alive and jump out of Japanese lunchboxes for a procession from the counter to the table. They dress up in animal costumes and then parade through an arch made of cookies. Stop-motion that is an ode to the Japanese Bento Box tradition of dressing children’s lunch snacks up as animals.
