Door by Banmei Takahashi – Japan | 1988 – 93 minutes
Smitten with a lonely housewife, a slighted psycho salesman terrorizes her and her young son in this outrageous home invasion classic with an explosive third act that truly needs to be experienced. Produced by the legendary Japanese indie collective, Director’s Company, and even spawned a later sequel directed by the great Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Unreleased outside of Japan until now, this undiscovered gem celebrating its 35th anniversary is now fully remastered and ready to have some respect put on its name. —Joseph Hernandez (BHFF 2023)

A Page of Madness by Teinosuke Kinugasa – Japan | 1926 – 71 minutes
Right up there with THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, Teinosuke Kinugasa’s fascinating 1926 masterwork A Page of Madness is one of the silent film era’s most distinctive horror films. Long lost and unseen, the film, in which a newly hired janitor in a mental hospital is put through a hallucinogenic and mentally disturbed ringer, is more than worthy of a new fandom. Brooklyn Horror is proud to present a special screening accompanied by a live score from The Flushing Remonstrance. —Matt Barone (BHFF 2023)

Ringu by Hideo Nakata – Japan | 1998 – 96 minutes
When you think of Japanese horror, chances are that the first film that comes to mind is Hideo Nakata’s brilliant and game-changing RINGU, with its cursed videotape, doom-laden phone calls, and all-timer ending. A major part of the BHFF’s documentary inclusion THE J-HORROR VIRUS, the film holds up as one of the scariest ever made, inspiring Gore Verbinski’s hugely popular American remake and turning Nakata into horror royalty. Toast to the film’s enduring 35-year legacy with Brooklyn Horror as we screen the American Genre Film Archive’s 4k restoration. —Matt Barone (BHFF 2023)

Trailer:

Tiger Stripes by Amanda Nell Eu – Malaysia, Taiwan, France, Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia | 2023 – 95 minutes
Twelve-year-old Zaffan lives her life with uber-confidence, stealing the daily show at school and being the alpha in her friend group. But when she has her first period, the young girl undergoes physical changes that may or may not be turning her into a monster and cause those around her to make her feel like some kind of freak. Using body horror, Asian folklore, and a propulsive energy to remix the coming-of-age narrative, first-timer Amanda Nell Eu’s TIGER STRIPES cleverly shows how growing up can be a waking nightmare. —Matt Barone (BHFF 2023)

– Short Films-

A Whim to Kill by Tiange Xiang – China | 2023 – 5 minutes
Mother and daughter work at a meat factory. In a hallucination of rage, the daughter kills the mother who metamorphoses into an unstoppable ghost. The lack of oxygen we feel sometimes in our family relationships, frames the film’s atmosphere. Not recommended for those with mommy issues. (MotelX 2023)

Trailer:

High Fun by Adesh Prasad – India | 2023 – 13 minutes
Plagued by depression and loneliness, a desperate young man seeks the one vice that may at least numb or distract him for a while. The Indian film High Fun (commonly known as ‘Party and Play’ or ‘Chemsex’ in the west) is a queer-themed horror film about living with your demons. (BHFF 2023)
