
The Seoul International Women’s Film Festival (Korea) is accepting films until May 2, 2025.
About the festival:
The Seoul International Women’s Film Festival (SIWFF) is a unique and influential event presenting new values and the alternatives from a feminist perspective among Korean international film festivals. The festival contributes to the development of women’s positive values and plays an essential role establishing a network between Asian and the other countries. SIWFF provides the ways to promote and exhibit Korean women’s films abroad by discovering and supporting women in film industry. It also helps Korean film industry develop and have diversity. Forming future-oriented, alternative culture, SIWFF contributes to the development of the balanced Korea culture to improve Korean national image.
Programs:
– Competition Sections:
* Discovery: international competition for debut and second feature films directed by female directors, or with at least one female director in co-productions. This section aims to uncover works that expand the horizons of women’s narratives and cinematic aesthetics while discovering emerging creative talent.
* Asian Shorts: competition dedicated to short films made by female directors of an Asian nationality or ethnic identity, serving as a gateway to discovering and supporting promising new talent.
* I-TEENS: competition showcasing short films by Korean teenage female filmmakers, highlighting their potential, nurturing future female directors, and supporting their creativity.
– Non-Competitive Section:
* New Currents: showcases the latest films by female directors or those focused on female themes, produced worldwide in recent years.
* Korean Panorama, Here & Now: focuses on Korean films made in recent years, highlighting the contemporary women’s issues and trends in Korean cinema, while shining a spotlight on major discourses and styles.
* Polemics: section dedicated to current feminist and women’s film issues, selected each year, showcasing relevant films and providing a platform for discussion.
* Queer Rainbow: presents the latest films in queer cinema, rethinking issues such as social norms, tolerance, and human rights from feminist-queer perspectives, while exploring cinematic approaches to representing queer identities.
* SIWFF Project: showcases completed works funded through the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival’s production support programs.
* Special Programs: focus on various themes related to film history, the film industry, feminism, and film aesthetics.
Eligibility:
– Films directed by a female director, or, at least one female director for co-production.
– Films that present various aspects of life from a woman’s perspective or provide insight into gender issues.
– Films must have been completed after January 1st, 2024.
– The festival accepts feature films (above 40 minutes) and short films (below 40 minutes).
– For the Discovery Section film must be first or second feature-length film by a director of any nationality.
– For the Asian Shorts, films must be by a director with Asian nationality or ethnic identity.
– For the I-Teens: films must be from Korea, made by a female director born after 2006.
– All genres including fiction, documentary, animation and experimental films can be accepted.
– In case of non-English films, the screeners without English subtitle will be accepted when submitted but English subtitle must be inserted on the print after your film is selected.
– Submissions can be done through the festival’s website or FilmFreeway.
– Submission Fee: FREE
– Deadline: May 2, 2025
– Notification Date: Mid-July, 2025
