20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 26th Seoul International Women’s Film Festival (Part 2)

We continue with our recommended short films from the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival, which will take place from August 22 – 28, 2024 in Seoul, South Korea.

Okshushu by Kim Bomin – Korea | 2024 – 26 minutes | World Premiere

Yunseul, who works at a smart farm, starts working with Hyorim to take a leave of absence for fertility treatment. Despite the rumors, Yunseul feels a growing affection for the hardworking Hyorim, but also develops complex emotions towards her, who has a child that Yunseul cannot have. (SIWFF 2024)

Queen’s Palace by Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing – Myanmar | 2024 – 11 minutes | World Premiere

This film portrays a group of Myanmar women protestors and activists living in a shelter in Mae Sot in Thailand. Their lives shaped by Myanmar’s Spring Revolution, they have fled the violence and oppression of their country’s military junta and now find themselves in an unwelcoming land.  (SIWFF 2024)

See You Next Week by Hynes Mariko – Japan | 2023 – 37 minutes | Korean Premiere

The life of a girl in high school begins to mirror the lead character in the morning TV drama she’s obsessed with. In post-WWII Japan, a young girl Asako tells her conservative parents she wants to go to Osaka to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. We realize it’s a morning TV drama playing out, watched by high school student Asako. With fiction and reality seemingly influencing each other as they converge, how will the story end for both Asakos? (SIWFF 2024)

So Long Mom by Yao Wencai – China | 2024 – 30 minutes

It is a summer time about memories and subtle emotions. A young girl with subtle melancholy, a stoic and tough mother, and a cheerful sunny aunt. In her mother’s small dry-cleaner’s store, they meet briefly and then separate. At the end of the summer, life returns to a calm state, and the feelings have quietly changed. (SIWFF 2024)

Sojourn to Shangri-la by Lin Yihan – China | 2023 – 20 minutes | Korean Premiere

A fashion commercial crew goes to shoot on the beach, only to discover that the installation built in advance has vanished due to the rising tide. Through the efforts of an art assistant, a drone flies out to search for the installation over the sea, while taking her into the unknown. (SIWFF 2024)

Sour Candy by Nishi Dugar – India | 2024 – 21 minutes | Korean Premiere

Guddal, a free-spirited 5-year-old, lives in her ancestral home with her younger brother Laddoo, and older sister Chinu. Guddal orchestrates mischievous antics with Laddoo, landing her in punishment. But a sudden event in the house makes everything different.  (SIWFF 2024)

10 years have passed since the Ferry Sewol disaster. There are still people waiting for the truth of the incident at Paengmok Port. (SIWFF 2024)

Stranger Than Toothache by Oh Jihyeon – Korea | 2024 – 16 minutes | World Premiere

Kim Jeon-gu and Park Du-gi are creating a bird field guide together under the name ‘JEONGUDUGI’. Having observed almost all the birds that can be found in the country, there was still one bird they hadn’t encountered yet… That is the rare species of the egrets, the ‘Waekguragi’.

While struggling to observe the Waekguragi, a peculiar-shaped wisdom tooth took root in Jeongu’s mouth. At first, the wisdom tooth could barely be discerned only through an X-ray. Its presence was minor, but as it grew, it began to itch inside Jeon-gu’s mouth. As Jeon-gu became increasingly uncomfortable with the troublesome wisdom tooth, she suddenly found herself observing Du-gi instead of birds. At that moment, a tip-off call came in claiming to have witnessed the Waekguragi.​ (SIWFF 2024)

The Popstar Water Deer and I by Sasha Lee – Korea | 2024 – 17 minutes

A lonely young programmer, Vega, falls in love with a beautiful popstar water deer. They sing a song of happiness together in fantasy. The pigeons constantly drag them back into the real world, and Vega’s longing for warmth is in need of being sated. (SIWFF 2024)

The Sea on the Day When the Magic Returns by Han Jiwon – Korea | 2022 – 25 minutes

Sejin once had the power to have anything she wanted just by thinking about it. But now she has lost her magic. Perhaps it disappeared because she couldn’t think of what she wanted. Six hours before her interview to be a tourist interpreter, Sejin heads to the weary sea to save her father. (SIWFF 2024)
