
We continue with our recommendations for the Jeonju International Film Festival, which is taking place from May 1 – 10, 2024 in Jeonju, South Korea.

MIMANG by Kim Taeyang – Korea | 2023 – 93 minutes | Korean Premiere
“Mimang” 迷妄 Wandering, unable to make sense from ignorance. A man gets off at the wrong bus stop and encounters a woman from his past.
Mimang” 未忘 Unable to forget what one wants to forget. The woman walks down the same streets she walked before with a different man.
“Mimang” 彌望 Searching far and wide. They are reunited yet again at a friend’s funeral and reflect on their shared past. (Jeonju 2024)

Mother’s Kingdom by Lee Sanghak – Korea | 2023 – 97 minutes | World Premiere
Doh Ji-wook is the author of Power of the Truth that gives hope to others, and his mother Joo Kyung-hee, a hairdresser at Kingdom Hair Salon, gives good care to her neighbors. One day, their peaceful kingdom is infiltrated by Kyung-hee’s dementia. Doh Joong-myung, a pastor, wants to uncover the truth. In turn, they make different choices to protect their family. Sister Yujeong by Chung Haeil – Korea | 2024 – 102 minutes | World Premiere
Yujeong, who works as a night shift nurse at a general hospital’s cardiology department, is now told that her 12th-grade younger sister, Kijeong, has been arrested by the police as a suspect in an infant abandonment case. Only then does Yujeong start to make desperate efforts to rescue her sister. (Jeonju 2024)

Ji-seok is a director. He has been struggling because of the money needed to produce films. Song PD, Ji-seok’s colleague, introduces him to an actress, Hong Mi-ran. Hong, now with terminal disease, agrees to pay for all the production costs under the condition that she must be the lead. In the turmoil of the Jeju 4.3 incident, Jeju Island witnessed the loss of an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 lives, with women constituting a significant yet often unrecognized proportion of the victims. This documentary illuminates the once-shrouded experiences of these women, led by a dedicated Jeju 4.3 researcher. (Jeonju 2024)
