15 Short Films you shouldn’t miss from the 22nd Florence Korea Film Fest

These are our fifteen recommended short films from the Florence Korea Film Fest, which will take place from March 21 – 30, 2024 in Florence, Italy.

50 cm by Kim So-jeong – Korea | 2023 – 19 minutes

A visually impaired Ga-yeong and her lover Eun-jeong prepare to run a marathon using their own method but find themselves in constant conflict. (FKFF 2024)

A Long Alone by Yeo Eun-a – Korea | 2023 – 8 minutes

The record of discontinued time and place, from dying alone to discovery. One year period after a person’s solitary death is shown in time-lapse. Inside the house, there are traces of his fierce life, and the audience can guess his life by following the traces. The house stays at the time of his death. On the contrary, the exterior landscape constantly changes, giving a feeling of contrast to the house. A year later, his body is found, and the scene of his death is cleared by special cleaners.

Battery Mommy by Jeon Seung-bae – Korea | 2023 – 9 minutes

A Korean university student takes on an unusual tutoring job and encounters a young child who refuses to write in English. As the tutor attempts to get to the root of the child’s reluctance, she uncovers a shocking revelation about the child and her mother.

Jiwon and Yulia by Moon Hae-jun – Korea | 2023 – 19 minutes

Jiwon, a 19-year-old 4th generation Koryo-saram (Korean-Uzbekistan), has been falling apart since Hani, Jiwon’s only Korean-born friend, started to prepare for the college entry exam. She decides to join Hani in her mischief with Hani’s new friend Sunwoo, to save their friendship. (SIWFF 2023)

Microwave Love by Kwon Chan-young – Korea | 2023 – 19 minutes

One day, a microwave emits a sound signal to a struggling aspiring writer, initiating communication between humans and machines. They fill each other’s loneliness and get closer. As the writer watches a movie, they gradually become captivated by the charm of the microwave and mistakenly believe that this companion machine possesses facial expressions and emotions like a living being. While Ichang and his boyfriend Gang-min are engaged in a lewd act on the phone, contact is lost after Gangmin’s sudden scream comes through the phone. Ichang, quarantined in his small studio apartment due to an epidemic, wants to check his boyfriend’s condition. (Mubi)

Sara by Lee Hyun-kyung – Korea | 2023 – 29 minutes

Sara, who grew up with no parents, does not know the meaning of his name. One day he receives a phone call from the police and goes to the place where his father died alone. He finds a photograph of his mother amongst his deceased father’s belongings and decides to find his mother. Following the traces of his father, he learns about the kind life his father had and the things that he never knew about his father. It’s a scorching summer. The girl and the boy cannot attend the festivities on the eve of the school festival. Then Kali says to the wandering children: “You know, where the festivities are taking place, as far as the shadow of the sacred tree reaches, young spirits are gathered under it.”
