20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 49th Seoul Independent Film Festival (Part 2)

We continue with our recommendations for the Seoul Independent Film Festival which will take place from November 30 until December 8, 2023 in Seoul, Korea.

My Xixter by Jo Hyun-kyung – Korea | 2023 – 25 minutes
Sohee wants to hide the fact that she has a real sister, from sister X. (SIFF 2023)

MYDEAR by Kim So-hee, Jeon Do-hee – Korea | 2023 – 25 minutes
Year 2027. Gaeul has a hearing impairment. She is troubled when the professor asks her whether she was going to participate in the graduation project to be conducted as a team. On her way back home, she tries installing ‘MYDEAR,’ a popular AI application.
“Talk to MYDEAR now.”
On the smartphone screen, a man around Gaeul’s age, stands. Gaeul talks to the man with the subtitle function of the application. The man leads the conversation with a gentle attitude. Spending time with the man becomes a daily routine, and Gaeul smiles more often.
Eventually, the subtitle function of the application disappears, and Gaeul fails to be included in the graduation project team. Gaeul starts to make efforts to communicate with ‘MYDEAR’ again. (SIFF 2023)

Sara by Lee Hyun-kyung – Korea | 2023 – 29 minutes
Sara, who grew up with no parents, does not know the meaning of his name. One day he receives a phone call from the police and goes to the place where his father died alone. He finds a photograph of his mother amongst his deceased father’s belongings and decides to find his mother. Following the traces of his father, he learns about the kind life his father had and the things that he never knew about his father. At the end of this journey, Sara finally comes to discover the meaning of his name. (SIFF 2023)

Shape of Wind by Lee Sung-gang – Korea | 2022 – 13 minutes
In the highlands of Asia, a boy lives with his sick grandmother, instead of his father who had left to work in a mine. One day, he leaves the house with a gun to revenge on a wolf that killed a lamb. However, the boy falls, gets lost in the blizzard and faints. After a while, the wolf reappears, and drags him somewhere. (SIFF 2023)

Joy is determined to become a famous YouTuber, and films every aspect of her life, from daily routines to studying. However, she feels insignificant, compared to the fun, cool, and glamorous lives of the YouTubers she admires. When a threat from her past resurfaces, Joy’s smartphone and recording device capture her real life. (SIFF 2023)

The Sea on the Day When the Magic Returns by Han Ji-won – Korea | 2022 – 25 minutes
Sejin once had the power to have anything she wanted just by thinking about it. But now she has lost her magic. Perhaps it disappeared because she couldn’t think of what she wanted. Six hours before her interview to be a tourist interpreter, Sejin heads to the weary sea to save her father. (SIFF 2023)

A death under suspicious circumstances, is concluded as suicide. A reporter believes there is a culprit: the victim’s blind daughter. In search of the truth, the reporter visits her house. (SIFF 2023)

Toad Worker by Hah Ji-min – Korea | 2022 – 10 minutes
Kong-ji is the most competent worker in the area. One day, toads gather to help her, but the water keeps on leaking from the broken jar, because they have to get off from work. (SIFF 2023)
