Three short films will close the Tasveer South Asian Film Festival which will take place from October 12 – 22, 2023 in Seattle & online.

Catfish by Abdullah Shahid – Pakistan | 2023 – 35 minutes
Hashim, a lonely office worker, is asked by his domineering and charismatic co-worker Iqbal to get the number of an attractive female client. Desperate for companionship, Hashim uses Artificial Intelligence to Catfish Iqbal, forging a deep online connection. As their bond strengthens, the question looms: how long until Hashim’s facade crumbles? (Tasveer 2023)

City of Men by Hira Sheraz – Pakistan | 2023 -20 minutes
De Saro Khaar (English: City of Men) is centered around two Pashtun girls for whom doing the most mundane things is an act of disobedience and rebellion. Freedom within indoctrination is sought through dreams of escaping. Being a Pashtun woman myself who grew up in a patriarchal household where me and my siblings were kept confined and kept away from the outside world, doing something very ordinary and mundane would feel defiance to ‘Pashtunwali’, which is the honor code that Pashtuns must live by. A Pastun women’s ethnic portrait is that ‘man’s honor depends entirely on a woman’s public behavior.’ If she brings shame to her family’s name (The man’s), the family would be subjected to society’s ‘peghor’, or ‘taunting’, which all families MUST avoid Or else, any outcome could be expected.(Tasveer 2023)

Eid Mubarak by Mahnoor Euceph – USA | 2023 – 16 minutes
Iman, a privileged Pakistani girl, goes with her family to buy a goat, as is the tradition in Pakistan before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Azha. She picks the cutest one, and takes it home. She spends all of her time with the goat, whom she names Barfi, after her favorite Pakistani dessert. Soon, however, she realizes that Barfi is not a pet, but a goat being raised for slaughter. She makes a plan to save Barfi’s life before he can be sacrificed on Eid. Along the way, through the help of her family and friends, she learns the true meaning of sacrifice, and the reason behind Eid al-Azha.(Tasveer 2023)
