20 Short films you shouldn’t miss at the 18th Busan International Kids and Youth Film Festival (Part 2)

We continue with our recommendations for the Busan International Kids and Youth Film Festival which will take place from July 10 – 16, 2023 in Busan, Korea.

Stars on the Sea by JANG Seung-wook – Korea | 2021 – 7 minutes

Sudden Store by PARK Seo-jin (Representative Director) – Korea | 2020 – 17 minutes

Surprisingly, a “Sudden Store” that sells things that grants people’s wish appears. Three stories start with in this ”SUDDEN STORE“, and these are, THE SPEAKABLE OBJECT, which is about a boy who obtains a pill that enables people to understand words of things and recovers his friendship, THE FIRST RIDE, which shows a girl’s first love toward her teacher, through a ring that shows the owner’s first love, and WATCH, which shows difficulties of a teenager who choose farming as their career, through a watch that can return the time. Sweet My Cabinet by PARK Si-yoon – Korea | 2022 – 13 minutes

Three bullies always torment San-woo. One day, they force him to bring their homework from the school cabinet at night. Afraid of retaliation, San-woo goes to the school in the middle of the night and opens the cabinet…. (BIKY 2023)

The Field Trip by KIM Ga-hyeon – Korea | 2022 – 11 minutes

Kang, a high school student, lives a life full of studying, under the silent pressure from expectations toward him. Being tired of such a monotonous life, Kang misses school for the first time in his life without any plans, and by chance he meets Jun, a child who ran away from home. (BIKY 2023)

The Memory by KIM Dae-hun – Korea | 2022 – 13 minutes

Shi-hyeon tries to commit suicide because he can’t bear the bullying of his friends. He miraculously survives but loses his old memories. He tries to recover his daily life with the help of his old friend, Min-su, but the students who bullied Shi-hyeon keep appearing and picking a fight. In the end, as Shi-hyeon fights back at them, the bullies kidnap Min-su and lure Shi-hyeon to a construction site. When Shi-hyeon faces the bullies…. (BIKY 2023)

Tomorrow’s Tomorrow by YOO A-ra – Korea | 2023 – 20 minutes

In the year of 2123, on Earth, a war breaks out to compete over the remaining resources due to human ignorance and greed, and the environment is so polluted that no living creature can survive without protection gear. Da-min, Jun-seong, and So-ul are evacuated to a nearby abandoned school after a car accident caused by a geomagnetic storm and a pollution storm. There, they find and rescue a girl with memory loss who fell, being unconscious without any protection gear. Will the kids be able to survive amid the upcoming disaster? (BIKY 2023)

What is Love? by YOON Young-eun – Korea | 2022 – 23 minutes

KIM Yena, 5th grader of elementary school, cheerful and outgoing, secretly likes PARK hyeonwoo in the same class who is introverted and much shorter than her. Yena loves everything about Hyeonwoo and tells this to her friends and a health teacher. One day, she saw him getting along with another girl and hurried to tell him how she feels about him. As she hoped, they start going out. However, there are more conflicts than she expected. Although friends and the health teacher give some advice on proper relationship, Hyeonwoo thinks that this relationship is not going to work and says they should break up in a gentle way, trying not to hurt her feelings. Wheels on the Bus by Surya Shahi – Nepal | 2022 – 16 minutes

After being bullied into making iron wheels for his upper-caste peers, Bhyal(12), a lower caste blacksmith, and his friend Laba(11) are compelled to steal iron from the village to make the wheels. At Bhyal workshops, the boys work through the night and fall asleep. Laba’s father finds his son asleep with Bhyal. Outraged at this sight, he calls the village religious chief to purify his son. You Know, There Are Ghosts Under the Tree by LEE Ru-ri – Korea | 2023 – 15 minutes

It’s a scorching summer. A girl, B-in, and a boy, Tae-ho cannot attend the events on the eve of the school festival. Kali says to the wandering children: “You know, where the events are taking place. Young ghosts are gathering in the shadow of the sacred tree reaches. It is the first short film presented by the “Gongdonghagwon (空洞學園) Project”, which tells the stories of schoolchildren and their schools in multi-sensory ways. (BIKY 2023)

You’re Ugly by Wise Elementary Life – Korea | 2022 – 22 minutes

Hwa-rin was once close to a friend who wears makeup, but as she found herself that she cannot apply cosmetics because of her vulnerable skin, she falls out with her friend. She gradually gets teased by her makeup-wearing friends as a foolish kid who does not even know how to put on makeup. One day, her makeup-wearing friends happen to use suspicious cosmetics and they gradually become strange… (BIKY 2023)
